For as long as I can remember I’ve been such a picky eater. Honestly, you’d have to trick me into eating vegetables if you wanted me to eat healthy! Does that sound like you too? Well, guess what? I changed. I did it. And if I can do it, so can you!
What I realized is that being picky is simply an excuse. Yes, I'm going to hit you with a dose of reality if that's the label you've placed on yourself. It's a big fat sorry excuse to remain a nutrition amateur.
Once you begin to step up your nutrition game, the results, the focus, the energy will follow. You’ll begin to crave it. You’ll begin to need it.
How did I crush my inner picky-eater?
For me it was all about Shakeology and the Ultimate Rest. If you’ve ever tried Beachbody’s Ultimate Reset then you know why; it’s 21 days of pure clean eating. No processed foods. No added sugar. For the most part, my diet for 3 weeks consisted of fruits and vegetables—I would have starved if I didn’t branch out and try new foods!
And Shakeology? It’s not your average protein shake. It's the gap-filler for your nutrition. It gives you what your body doesn't even know it needs right now because our meals are so nutritionally deficient. Plus, it’s delicious. I looked forward to my Shakeology every day during the Ultimate Reset. Even today I still look forward to drinking Shakeology. Every. Single. Day.
On the other hand, diving right into it might not be the way to go for everyone. If you’re a picky eater and you want to learn to eat healthy, try doing a few of these things:
Tips for Learning to Love Vegetables & Healthy Food
Give foods a second (or third) chance.
Our tastebuds change overtime. Just because you hated squash last time you tried it (when you were 10) doesn’t mean that you’ll have the same feeling about it now.
Make small changes and healthy swaps.
Sometimes, you’ve got to take it slow (unlike me) and make small changes. Add a healthy side to your favorite meal, or even just one new healthy ingredient into the dish. Try grilling instead of frying. Or you can make healthy swaps! If you like to celebrate Taco Tuesday, swap out your tortillas for a lettuce wrap.
There are all sorts of healthy swaps you can make:
- Zucchini noodles instead of pasta
- Cauliflower rice in place of white rice
- Baked sweet potato fries vs. regular french fries
- Homemade salad dressings instead of store bought
- Swap sour cream for plain greek yogurt
Try cooking vegetables in a different way.
There are so many ways to prepare vegetables. Let’s use brussels sprouts for example, they can be: steamed, oven roasted, sautéed, fried, or eaten raw in a salad. While I wouldn’t recommend frying them if you’re trying to eat healthy, adding a little olive oil to a pan and sautéing them is still healthy and much tastier than steaming.
Break down the ingredients in your favorite foods.
Here’s a good example: burgers. You love burgers, but what do you get on it? Bun, burger patty, lettuce, tomato, onions, ketchup, mustard. Hold on there! Lettuce and tomato? You like lettuce and tomato? Guess what we can do with that? Make a salad! We can also throw those tomato slices on the grill to make a tasty side one evening.
So next time you’re cooking, ask yourself, “what healthy ingredients could I take out and transform into a healthy meal?”
Try something new while eating out.
If you’re not the best cook, it might be smart to leave your first taste of something new to the professionals! That way you know it’s being cooked right and know what to aim for when you’re cooking.
It won't happen overnight, but eventually you’ll learn to LOVE healthy foods and you body will thank you!
